Uniting with Indonesia

In April of 2017 a team of hairdressers from Heart of Mary™ will be flying to Indonesia to change the future for a group of children living in poverty in Bogor. This team donating their time and skills is only one piece of the puzzle. They need your help to make this dream a reality.

Will you join us?

In 2015 Heart of Mary Director, Bethany Inez had the chance to visit Bukit Gloria school in Bogor, Indonesia (a 3 hour drive from Jakarta). Through being connected to a group who first funded the opening of Bukit Gloria school, Bethany had the opportunity to visit this school and bring a lil...

Join us in being ORIGINAL!

When we began All For Mary™ we set out to create a salon experience that was intentionally different to the rest of the hair and beauty industry. We saw cracks and cultural issues with the way our industry currently functions. Issues that hurt people and issues that don't really achieve the goals the industry claims to achieve. The current culture couldn't be ignored and our hearts couldn't join them because of that culture...so we decided to create a new one.

A lot has been put in place in hundreds of different ways to help us move towards achieving our goal. Overall we're really proud of...

Haircuts that change lives

So I have to let you in on a lil secret....hairdressers (well, majority anyways) hate doing kids haircuts! It's nothing against the child. Each one really is gorgeous in their own way, but when that gorgeous wriggling monkey causes you to cut your finger the cuteness starts to wear off. Having mini heart attacks every time you think you're about to snip their ear doesn't help either.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this movement, (generally also combined with tears and a pressure to have the world’s most acrobatic haircut ever also completed faster than the speed of light), you then need to find...

Get the foundation right - part two

How did you go with part one? We know, a LOT of info to take in (can you see the reason why most hairdressers just leave this topic alone? Imagine walking a different person through that every half an hour ‪#‎exhausting‬!) It is really important info that is the base to getting great hair results though...if you didn't get a chance be sure you jump onto www.allformary.com/blog/get-the-foundation-right-part-one before moving onto part two.

Now, are you ready to transform your locks into a luscious mane?!

How to create a healthy foundation...

Prep the foundation
Firstly...

Get the foundation right - part one

How easily could you build a home if the concrete slab was full of dips and bumps? Would plants thrive in a field full of rocks? Ahh no. Creating results that are spectacular occur when a foundation is well prepared...since this theory works in just about any aspect of life, it's not surprising that it's even relevant when it comes to your hair.

Colours don't look as vibrant or shiny, or even last as long as they could if the hair itself is weak and brittle.

Haircuts don't look as sharp or shapely on hair that is weighed down, flat and lifeless.

Styling products and tools don't...

Become a brushing master!

Do you have any idea how many people brush their hair wrong? Yes, I'm serious. It seems like a no brainer but there are actually some very easy and very common things that are done wrong orrrr shall we say done not as great as they could be. Don't stress, it's such a simple area to tweak! Once you have mastered the following hair-brushing-tips, you will be well on your way to creating awesome hair results.

1. Make sure you have a great brush, one that actually still has the little balls on the ends so your scalp is taken care of too. Brushes that have all the bristles at the same length are ideal,...

Keeping hair healthy this Summer!

We’re seeing lots of it happening already!! Summer has arrived which has us all diving into a swimming pool or visiting the beach whenever an opportunity arises. Such a great way to cool down and relax! Such a great way to also cause damage to our hair (insert sad face here).

Don’t sweat it, there is a way to reduce the damage to your hair...four in fact!

1. Think of your hair like a sponge. Before jumping into your chosen liquid coolness pop your hair under the water from your tap. The more 'good' water it’s already soaked up the less of the not so awesome water it will...

Creating Beautiful Skin

The heat hit us like a wave the second we got off the plane. Being respectful to the culture in Indonesia we were covered up across our shoulder and down to our ankles. Have you tried to do that on a hot summers day in Australia? Not likely. Here we bare as much of our bodies as we can in the efforts to free our skin of the sweaty pool pouring from us. It's not like they aren't sweating in Indonesia, they are. Suddenly you are so aware of the physical desires that are being pushed through to live the level of respect they chose to show the human body. It's not a case of it being a sin or not; a law or not;...

Unleashing the Heart of Mary™

It just started as this little voice. They were asking the crowd who would be interested in going to Indonesia to teach English, talking about a school in a third world country that needed support. I sat there thinking that I wouldn't be any good at that, but I could cut hair. THAT I'm good at.

They said yes, you can go. So you keep moving, stepping forward with the plan. Doors opening...sometimes that's all you need to look for to know you are on the right track. Is it happening easily? Or do you need to force it? The easy flow seems to always be teamed up with a sense of peace. The forcing...

Why create the Raving Mary Tribe?

You don’t have to travel anywhere to see it, just look around where you are now. There’s a gap. Where there should be confidence there is insecurity. Where there should be an understanding of one’s own value there are questions of worth. Where there should be a sparkle and a passion towards life, there is a body that is only going through the motions, feeling that simply surviving this life is enough.

Perhaps you don’t need to look into the eyes of those around you to notice it, perhaps you only need to stand in front of the mirror.

We’ve had enough, have you? We know that we were...

It happens every time Kimberley enters the salon. Other clients and my team mates all do it. They stop, become distracted by her, they listen in. You can see why they can’t help themselves; Kimberley is pretty damn entertaining. There hasn’t been so much as a fringe trim appointment where she hasn’t had me and anyone within earshot in stitches of laughter. Being comical is who she is. Are the onlookers drawn to more than that though? I wonder if they listen in for the jokes or because they can sense what’s special about her too?

Can they sense that she has something that we all want to obtain?

Kimberley is the kind of...

Heart of Mary™ supporting South East Asia

In October 2015 Heart of Mary™ will be making our first overseas impact by visiting a community in South East Asia! All For Mary’s Director Bethany Inez will be heading over to Bogor to undertake a number of activities aimed to show value to a group of children less privileged than we are in Australia.

One portion of Bethany’s week will be spent at the Bukit Gloria School, a vocational school that is providing children with an education that will set them up with life skills as well as giving them opportunities to develop the skills needed for a job in the future. The school is in an...

Heart of Mary™ supporting the Hope Foundation

Have you heard about the amazing work being achieved by Hope Foundation? Founded by the courageous Bronwen Healy (author of Trophy of Grace) this local Brisbane charity is a service that exists to come alongside women wanting life change from the sex industry and/or addictions. We are so inspired by their cause, and the positive support they are providing to women in our local area that we have taken them on board as an ongoing charity we contribute too.

How do we do this? One way is that the team at All For Mary™ regularly host salon days for women cared for by the Hope...

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they describe the people in their lives. Some start with describing them physically while for others a physical feature isn't even mentioned. Some talk about the experience of being around them, how the person makes them feel when hanging with them, while others have never even pondered that question. I always find myself captivated by how Sarah describes the people closest to her...she's not alone in the way she does it, but she is unique as to the depth from which her perspective is coming.

For Sarah, her description centres around their character, from who they ARE as a person. How...

'To be nobody but yourself in a world that's doing its best to make you somebody else, is to fight the hardest battle you are ever going to fight. Never stop fighting.' E.E. Cummings.

I love the wisdom of that quote. The picture that it paints is so accurate...it IS a fight. I often wonder how many people are consciously aware of that? I wonder how many are fighting? I wonder, how many are actually prepared for the fight?

Lizzie's salon visits are really interesting to me. Somehow at every appointment she manages to show me another side of her that I didn't see before. Like peeling back the layers of an onion, Lizzie has a...

How long does someone get to impress? A few seconds? Minutes? Is it a verbal thing? Or can they be written off on a physical sense...not making the grade without a word even being spoken?

10 years ago I was given a chance by Annette that most people wouldn't be handing out. I was a 19 year old girl who was feeling incredibly exhausted and brain dead the day Annette was sat in my salon chair. The idea of asking another person 'what are you getting up to this weekend' sent chills of boredom down my spine. So instead, the creative inspiration that spilled from my lips was 'If you could be killed with any weapon what would you choose...

‘What are you thinking this time? A fade? Tracks? Colour?’ Sometimes it’s just fun to suggest these new and different things so you can see the thought process tick across your clients face for just a moment. He didn’t fail me that day as the smile spread wider. ‘No, just a tidy up. The ‘preppy’ look works for me’.

Michael and Philip have been getting the same haircut with me for over a year now. Each visit I learn a little bit more about them, and continue to understand in a greater way why the look created represents them so well. Is it cutting edge fashion? No. Is it going to win me an award some day? Definitely...

Cathy is a rare find in the beauty industry. She’s a wife, a mother, a business owner and runs a household…all of which she juggles with a beautiful smile on her face. Why do I find her such an interesting rarity that I would ask her to be our November Celebrity Next Door? Well, because somehow in the middle of all the roles that she plays, she still finds the time to cover one more role…to be ‘Cathy’.

We live in a time where life is busy…really busy.  It seems that the demands of the world are only increasing each year. It’s so easy to become distracted with everything that is going on that it’s becoming more and...

Complete honesty. There’s no point in writing these articles if I am not always completely honest about the thoughts that race through my mind. We’re doing these client features to explore people...to explore confidence. We cannot explore what we do not analyse, so right or wrong of me to have the thoughts that I did, we need to explore their presence.

The experience of meeting Gliere was an eye opener. A refreshing and exciting one. When I turned to see my next client, I honestly groaned a bit inside. Yep, I did. As much as we hate to admit it, women tend to see other women as competition. When meeting someone new, a woman’s...

Anne-Maree looked me straight in the eye as she confirmed her next booking would now be with me. Her huge smile expanded when I assured her this would be the case. As the salon door closed behind her, I turned to see the stunned look on the receptionist’s face. “All the other staff struggle with her; she loved you! How did you do that?!”

I replied with a shrug and a smile: “Maybe I’m the first person who didn’t try to change her.”

A few hours earlier I had been asked to help a stylist with a second opinion on her client’s colour. The stylist is a fabulous colour artist; however, she was stumped with how to create...

It must be 10 years now. Each time Joanne’s been consistent. She walks into the salon with this gorgeous peace about her; a calmness that is such a joy to be around. There’s always a smile, she’s always happy to see us.  She quietly takes a seat and patiently waits for us.

Ahhh, there’s my Joanne. The one that lets me be an artist. The one who’s confident nature puts me at ease.

When we first met, it didn’t take long to get to the core of what Joanne is after from her salon experiences; variety; excitement; bold, funky hair. If it wasn't on the first appointment it would only have been a few visits in that we were...

She walked into the salon as a blonde, yet floated out as a red head. Had Kellie been planning on a change that day? I don’t think so, but I’m so glad she listened to me.

Sometimes the thought will hit you within the first few minutes; sometimes before you’ve even started talking to them.

This colour isn’t her at all, why is she getting it done?

You start the consultation process but there’s really two conversations going on; the one that you are having with her, and the one that is going on within your head.

So she’s blonde because it blends with her greys the most. The greys are still going to grow through as...

The Celebrity Next Door Project BEGINS!

Were you there when it started? Did you notice the subtle shift? It would've been slight at first...a tiny step they referred to as being modern, current or progressive. Those that craved the easy answer jumped on board straight away. Those that argued against its moral values were told they were being old fashioned; times had changed and they should get with the program.

Little by little the change grew. It developed. It inspired a following. It took over mindsets until it became part of our everyday life; a filter through which we view others, through which we even view ourselves.

Today we...

A Beautiful Resolve

Have you stepped into a garden? Gazed in awe of the beauty of the scene in front of you? Stop and imagine it for a second. The fresh air is brushing against your cheeks ever so gently. The divine smell of the flowers hitting your nostrils with a purely intoxicating fragrance that is better than any perfume you’ve ever smelt. The sun is gently resting on your skin while the sense of peace is overwhelming your very soul.

There is a fresh, calm vibe in the air. It’s breathtaking. The gorgeousness that is nature captivates you! The view is so stunning it’s actually difficult to put into words. These...

The Essential Hair Tool

In most women’s bathrooms there is a drawer that holds the one item they believe will fix their hair in any given situation. Frizzy? They grab the iron. Uncontrollable waves? They grab the iron. Sitting the wrong way? They grab the iron.

This is however, the most incorrect form of styling known to mankind!

To understand how to style your hair you must first understand what is happening to the hair in each state.

Our hair has two different types of bonds that create the state of our strands. One type of bond is what is being broken and then ‘reset’ when we go through the chemical services of...
